November is the time when hundreds of writers commit to writing 50,000 words, or an entire novel, within 30 days or less. This is National Novel Writing Month, also known as NaNoWriMo or just NaNo. Usually, one writes a new story for NaNo, but some of us choose to use this time as motivation to finish a current work-in-progress, those people are known as rebels.
Ambitious or crazy, both are synonymous with NaNoWriMo, especially when November is also the time for planning Thanksgiving, family get-togethers, and Christmas shopping/planning. Not a whole lot of time for writing, yet for the past 20 years writers have committed again and again, some winning, some coming close, and others not so much.
Last year was my first NaNoWriMo and I was roughly 500 words away from meeting the goal when midnight came on the last day. I had done pretty good the whole month, only missing 2 days out of 30, but I still came up short. My sister, Ra, however won with a few hours to spare and was blissfully watching a movie while I was frantically pounding my keyboard.😤😉
I thought I had been writing as fast as I could, but when Ra and I were talking about NaNo strategies for this year, I realized I had been editing as I went last year, catching typos, badly worded sentences, or just a bit of nit-picking to get the scene ‘perfect’. I wish I’d learned what I shared in this post before last year’s NaNo, then maybe I’d have done better.
This year I plan on winning, and hopefully being a rebel will help. I’m working on last year’s NaNo novel, it’s also the one I wrote a bit about in this post as well as being the one I mentioned I was taking a break from. So far everything seems to be going smoothly, it’s day 15 of NaNo and I’ve written 28,261 words so far. For fun and to keep myself motivated, I’ll try posting my progress throughout the rest of the month. Feel free to comment with yours if you need the accountability to keep you motivated as well! Next post I’ll share a brief summary of the story I’m working on in case anyone’s interested.
Are you participating in NaNoWriMo? I’d love to hear about your progress! And to all you
crazy brave people who are doing it, good luck!
